Alex Schaufele’s experiences growing up in a family that wore denim for work and play shaped her view of what makes a great pair of jeans. As an adult managing gallery spaces, she often searches for and struggles to find aesthetic utility garments. Designing VERTEX was an opportunity to combine her childhood observations with her current wardrobe needs.

Inspired by vintage trousers and contemporary designer garments, the VERTEX jeans are a choose-your-own-adventure sewing opportunity. With distinctive hip darts supporting generous front pockets and four possible waistband combinations, VERTEX can be dressed up or made more casual. Channel the 80s with stonewashed denim and a shaped back waistband, or go for a dark wash and a belted waistband for the office.

From each pattern purchase, we give 50% to the designer. Our goal is to support independent creatives and promote a democratic and open society.

Fabric Recommendations:
VERTEX works best in woven medium-weight denim, hemp, canvas, and twill fabrics. Consider using wool for a twist on a classic trouser. Lightweight fabrics are not recommended to support the darts. The indigo blue sample is made in washed soft indigo hemp (100% European hemp, 10.18 oz/345 gsm). The light beige sample is made in “Hemp Denim in Natural Colour” (100% European hemp, 10.18 oz/345 gsm). Both fabrics by Ecological Textiles.

A4 (home printing) and A0 (copy shop printing) PDF files with layers, sizes nested. Sewing instructions are in a separate PDF file.
