The TORIL trousers are distinctive slacks with patch pockets and flounce on the leg. You can make your version without the flounce for straight-leg everyday trousers, and if you prefer side-seam pockets instead of patch pockets, you can move the zip to the centre front seam. A wider leg gives the design a bit of a culotte feeling. You might also want to consider cropping the legs for a fresh summer look.

Vanessa Hansen is a pattern designer and textile artist who has just returned to Sweden after working in the London fashion industry for eight years. She started her sewing journey as a small child, watching her mother. She has worked for labels that make clothes for Michelle Obama, Emma Watson, and the Duchess of Cambridge. Vanessa’s design work has always been fuelled by her passion for making her own clothes at home. Wanting to combine pattern cutting with the art of hand-printing and dyeing fabrics, she started designing patterns for home sewists. “It's incredibly rewarding to see people of different ages and body types make my designs.”

Fit and size:
Choose your size based on your hip circumference. Add a recommended positive ease of 1.6–3.9"/4–10 cm. Pick the size that is the best match for your hips.

Ajak Majok is 66"/168 cm tall and wears the TORIL trousers in size 2. Anastasia Lapsuy is 56"/142 cm tall and wears the TORIL trousers without ruffles in size 5. The length of the trousers has been adjusted for her.

Fabric recommendations:
Choose a medium to lightweight trouser fabric with some drape – for instance, wool blend suitng, a linen/viscose blend, stone-washed linen, chambrays, or general trouser fabrics.

The powder coloured sample with flounce is made using a fine 100% cotton corduroy (4.3 oz/145 gsm) from Tygverket that Vanessa hand-dyed with lichen (Parmelia saxatilis). The light grey samle trousers are made from "Hopea", a herringbone linen blend (50% linen, 50% cotton, 4.3oz/145 gsm) by Kultavilla from Named.
