Winter Wonder Hood can be made in a multitude of ways, so have fun with it! Many variations can be achieved by using different fabrics, affecting the size of the face opening. For versions made with woven fabrics, choose a larger opening than for versions made with knitted fabric. Adjust the width and length of the neckband to change the look and feel. Or leave off the neckband and just hem the bottom to create a cute little hood! You can add a pom-pom to the top for a bit of fun, or leave the hood unadorned for a more practical look.
Sophie Hood lives in Colchester, Vermont, USA, and is the owner and operator of Little Bird Sewing Studio, where she teaches sewing and crafts to all ages and levels. Sophie has a deep love and fascination with headwear and loves hats of all kinds. When she created the design for the WINTER WONDER HOOD, she was thinking about what kinds of accessories she’d like to wear in the cold winter weather while out cross-country skiing or walking her dogs. The hood is inspired by vintage skiwear and diving gear, as well as some more whimsical things like gnome hats.
From each pattern purchase, we give 50% to the designer. Our goal is to support independent creatives and promote a democratic and open society.

Fabric Recommendations:
You can use almost any type of fabric for this design, as long as you’re willing to experiment! The pattern was designed with cold weather in mind. A quilted cotton works well to give the hood a bit more structure. You can pre-quilt some fabric by sandwiching the batting of your choice between two layers of fabric, then pin and sew together in your preferred quilting pattern. For a woven quilted version, choose the larger face opening on the pattern template. Use wool coating for a warm, woolly, non-stretch version. Alternatively, you could use a waxed canvas lined with flannel for a rainy-day option, or even make a lightweight cotton version for sun protection on warm days. You could also use a fluffy sweatshirt fleece for a stretchy, cosy option. For versions made with knit and stretch fabric, choose the smaller face opening on the pattern template. In addition to the main fabric, you’ll need a ribbed or knitted fabric with at least 25% stretch for the neck ribbing and face opening ribbing. For the quilted version, you’ll need batting, preferably natural fibres such as wool, cotton, or bamboo, or polyester batting made from recycled materials.
The quilted sample is made in boiled organic wool (100% organic wool, 14.75 oz/500 gsm), wool fleece (85% new wool, 15% polyester, 3.54 oz/120 gsm) for the batting, and 1x1 stretch GOTS organic cotton in “Federal Blue” (96% organic cotton, 4% elastane, 7.37 oz/250 gsm) for the ribbing. All fabrics by Ecological Textiles. The teddy sample is made in “Organic Plush Fabric” in the colour “Weizen” (100% organic cotton, 9.73 oz/330 gsm) by Lebenskleidung with organic cotton wide rib in “Roasted Almond” (95% organic cotton, 5% elastane, 17.70 oz/600 gsm) by Ecological Textiles.
